I Love What I Do… Who Needs a Business Plan?

Most solo-preneurs small business owners are doers, not planners. Sound familiar? Writing a plan seems like an onerous, overwhelming task that will only serve to take time away from making money. Business plans are for bank loans, right? And if I’m not looking for one of those, why the business plan?

How about thinking of it as a roadmap or blueprint? If you were building a new house, would you use a blueprint or would you just go out and buy materials and start building (for some of you, I know the answer!). Here’s the deal. Having a clear outline, timeline and sense of where you want to go and how you’re going to get there will really serve your business. It will also help you map your marketing strategies and tools and know what to implement when. If you’re like many entrepreneurs, you have lots of great ideas, but no organized ‘plan of attack’.

You probably even have a fairly good plan in your head, but you nearly get sick thinking about getting it down in writing. Cleaning the refrigerator is more appealing than a plan. And yet…

Did you ever have those moments when you’re not sure what to do next? Your focus feels fractured and you’re frozen? If you have a simple, actionable plan, it becomes a resource (blueprint) for what to do next in your small business. You’ll feel saner, more organized and focused. It will help you get from Point A to Point B and Point B includes the financial destination – the place you’re heading where there is an abundance of all resources, including money.

You might be surprised by how simple it is to get it down on paper and how freed up it makes you feel. Start free from if that’s easiest. Write down what you really want to accomplish with your business. Where do you want to be financially in 1 year, 3 years, and 5 years? What do you want to have achieved. How will you do that? What means and methods? What kind of assistance will you need and where will you find it?

What steps do you need to take first? Which are more long term? Which ones cost money and which are sweat equity? Which things need time to be realized and so should be started and worked on in the background while you’re doing other things? Social media would be an example of that. Building your presence over time so that when you are ready with new products and services, you already have an audience that knows and trusts you.

You’ve probably heard the old adage that failing to plan is planning to fail. Don’t be a statistic. Be a success and make a plan. You’ll thank me. Really, you will!
