I’ve seen it many times. People get everything set up to run a successful business. Some buy into a direct sales or network marketing business. Others set themselves up with a franchise and others still set up an online business. Perhaps you’ve gotten some specialized training you can use to help others and you’re ready to ‘put out your shingle’ and start doing business.
Ready, set, STOP.
What happens? You’ve mastered the planning and you’ve put everything in place that you need – from building your knowledge base to having the products and/or services lined up – to the website and marketing materials. Now when it’s time to get customers or clients who can benefit from all that you’ve got to offer, you freeze.
You find excuses and sometimes those excuses are very real reasons why you can’t spend time building or developing your business. Family issues, health challenges, financial stress. All of these can get in the way of making money from your business.
The truth is, there will always be things – large and small that will conspire to keep you from focusing on building or launching your business. Some days the nastiest task will seem more appealing. Cleaning the refrigerator? Lovely – I’m in! We all have our ‘stories’. Our reasons why we can’t get something done. Or won’t. At the end of the day, they’re just that: stories.
You can rewrite your story at any time.
Stop running your story – even for a day or a week. Give yourself the opportunity to do something else, to do it differently. Remember that you’re creating your reality – day to day. You’re making the choices that will inform your future. Yes, every day you’re choosing. Why not choose to make one small change. Really – you don’t have to take on everything at once.
It’s the small measurable activities – that added up over time, make your business thrive.
Would you say that you spend more time thinking about the things that need doing than those things might actually take to do? If so, you’re not alone. The solution? Make a small change to start the ‘change ball’ rolling.
Start by identifying the MONEY tasks in your business.
What one thing, if you did it consistently every week, would bring you business? It almost always boils down to making contact with the people who might be interested in what you offer. Take small ‘bites’. How about 10 calls each week? Or if you’re not calling, a measurable, yet manageable amount of outreach (or dare I say: marketing!) You could probably get this done in 60-90 minutes and relieve the ten hours you spend thinking about the things you should be doing and just doing them.
If you made just 10 calls each week, you’d have contacted over 500 people in a year. What would that do for your business? What if you increased that number?
Start with small, manageable increments and do WHATEVER it takes to get yourself in action. Getting started is often the hardest part. Remember why you’re doing this – be bold and take action. You’ll feel much better and you’ll get paid as a result!
