I have long believed that you have to bring passion to whatever you do, or it just doesn’t work, or certainly doesn’t work as well as it could. We’ve all heard the phrase “fake it ‘til you make it”. Not only does that generally not work, it’s hard to bring passion to something fake or inauthentic. So scratch that idea and go for the real passion instead. People will be naturally drawn to it and you won’t have to fake anything!
What is passion in business and how do you know if you have it?
When you have the passion, you know it. Passion is the excitement you feel when you’re excited to get to work first thing in the morning and you can work with focus without feel tired, drained or resentful. It’s when you don’t mind coming home from vacation because you get to work and further your project. It’s when you are happy to see Monday morning and get to start in on your work.
You know how we’re all drawn to people who have that ‘spark’ – the people who are energetic and happy about what they’re doing – that seem to ‘have it going on’? Those are the people who are living their passion.
When you are living your passion, through your business, what you’re doing doesn’t feel like work, it feels like what you ‘get to do’ and you feel lucky, privileged, even blessed. It’s that sense of having found your place in the world, that you are genuinely doing what is yours to do. It feels great and it affects every aspect of your life in a positive way.
I’m not suggesting that if you are passionate about something it will turn into business success, but I am suggesting that without passion, you are likely to limit your success. You must bring talent and focus to your business – those are also key ingredients for business success, but when they are wrapped in your passion, life is good and business thrives.
So many working people are dissatisfied with their jobs. It’s almost cliché. They hate Sunday night because they’re dreading Monday. They spend their working life thinking about their time off. They value time away from where they earn their money much more than they value the time at work.
When you’re stuck in a job you hate, that filters through to the rest of your life. How much better to spend your days doing what you love and eagerly anticipating what’s next.
If you haven’t yet identified your passion, or if you don’t see how one turns their passion into profit, ask yourself what you would do all day, every day if you didn’t get paid? What would you show up for no matter what? When you take money out of the mix, what things do you love doing? There’s the passion. Bridging the gap is figuring out how to take that passion and translate it into your livelihood. People who are living their passion, through their businesses tend to earn more and succeed at greater levels.
Often when you think about what you love to do and begin to imagine how you could turn that passion into an income producing business, you freeze. We fear failure. We fear our inadequacies; we question our skills and talents and wonder if we know enough, if we’re good enough. That’s natural. It’s how we’re wired as human beings. Go there and then come back and realize that you can focus on the positive aspects of what you love to do and completely avoid the negativity. It’s a choice. Truly, it is.
When you accept that choice, and follow what’s in your heart, things have a way of falling into place. You meet the right people; opportunities come your way, things just ‘click’. Stop for a minute and think of a time that happened for you. Can you remember it? Feel it? When everything seemed to be lining up just right? It’s because you were doing what was yours to do. It really works that way.
Living your passion as your livelihood may sound like having it all, and it may well be. Many of us were raised on the idea that we have to struggle to succeed. I believe – because I’ve seen it in myself and in others – that when you follow what’s in your heart, you can have what it is you dream of, without struggle. You can enjoy your work and make great income too. You deserve to enjoy your life, follow your passions and earn what you deserve.
